is a sentence-ending particle to emphasize a sentence. It can be placed directly after an i-adjective or a verb (in its informal form). It can be placed after a na-adjective or noun by adding だ before .

The meaning depends on the context and intonation. It can mean the following things

  • Conforming a request from the listener.
  • Expressing hope (In forms such as 無いかな, といいな, と思うがな)

Note that is often lengthened to the more emphatic なあ without change in meaning.
